The recent explosion in content marketing has blurred the line between business generation and content generation. It seems painfully obvious, but it is worth mentioning: The content you push is not the same as sales. You cannot build a business on content generation alone. While content generation is important, every time you push out content, it should be with a purpose. This purpose could be to sell a product, answer a question, lay the groundwork for an upcoming service or some other purpose. Below are four important elements for your business, other than content, that you should be thinking about.

The product or service you are going to be offering

Don’t start pushing out content until you have a product. That doesn’t mean that it is fully tested and ready to be sold, it means that you have an idea of what you want to sell. Content generation will be part of that plan, but only a part.

The first impression you give to potential clients

You only have one chance to make a good first impression. For online marketing, your website is the primary first impression for the majority of your audience. You might spend hours generating excellent content, but if you don’t have an attractive website, none of that matters.

Your website and content should reflect your products. Use similar organization patterns, color schemes and fonts. You want to create a cohesive experience from website to content to products.

Keep in mind that new website designs come out every year. You must innovate or risk becoming stale or obsolete. Consider a website overhaul every two to five years.

The way you treat your customers

Many companies are consumed trying to generate likes and comments that they forget the essential rules of customer service. Yes, you should have an active online presence. However, that should not detract from actually caring for and responding to real customer concerns or complaints.

Don’t just provide customers with a phone number or email. Encourage them to contact you. These are real customers that purchased from you. Their opinions and critiques matter. Every bit of information will help you improve your business for the future.

Impress your customers by going above and beyond. Promise excellent customer service and then deliver. If you guarantee a response within 24 or 48 hours, then do it. If it is a complicated issue, you don’t need to fix all of it in the first response. You can send an acknowledgment email with some preliminary solutions.

The method you choose to sell your product or service

The greatest content and product in the world will not matter if you can’t sell it. Yes, great products sell themselves, but you still need a system to push them. The modern method of selling products is the “sales funnel.” This is a system by which you breakdown each interaction with your customer. Each interaction should generate another conversion until eventually you sell the product.

Generally a “sales funnel” follows this pattern: Awareness; Lead Conversion; Engagement; Education and Purchase. As you move down the funnel, you come closer to generating sales. Breakdown each step as it applies to your company.

Don’t neglect the people that don’t make it all the way through the funnel, they are still interested in your products. You might be able to sell them something in the future.
