content marketing

When you think of content marketing, what comes to mind? Just throwing together different forms of content and calling that your marketing plan? The truth is, content marketing is so much deeper than that. Yes, content marketing is using different forms of content to achieve your marketing goals, but you need a strategy before you begin. We are here to help you with the first steps in determining your approach.

First, let’s define content marketing. This is the strategic approach to creating content that is value driven and relevant in order to attract and convert your target audience.

Valuable Content

Valuable content answers unmet needs and curiosities that customers may have. When you create valuable content, determine if it will “hit the mark.” Always keep in mind the questions that your customers are asking. You can create infographics, interactive content, content that evokes emotion, or videos to help your audience.

Relevant Content

Relevant content is tailored to platform-specific needs. This is very similar to valuable content. This will need to be created with your audience in mind. You need to first understand who your audience is. What are their pain points and their interests? It matters more that your audience finds your content helpful than it is the actual form of the content. You can use graphics, videos, and blogs as long as they are helpful to whoever is viewing them.

When you are getting ready to create your content strategy, remember these three questions:

  • Who is your content for?
  • Why are you creating this content?
  • What problem will you help your audience solve?

You can also take these questions deeper with this strategy framework:

  • Define your goal

How do you see this working out? For every industry, the goal is going to be very different. Not every business will have an immediate response to their marketing efforts, it will take some time. Some industries initially need brand awareness to keep them at the forefront.

  • Identify your audience’s personas

Your buyer persona is the representation of your ideal customer. This is based on market research and the data on your existing customers. Knowing this helps you to plan out your content.

  • Determine the type of content you will create

Once you have identified your ideal customers, you can figure out the type of content you can focus on. What kind of graphics will you create? Will you focus on website content? What kind of videos should you make?

  • Brainstorm your content ideas with your team

Talking over your ideas with your marketing team will help you execute the best possible approach. You can get insight that you maybe didn’t think of before.

  • Create an action plan

This is when you can finally put your plan in motion. Communicate with your clients about your approach and begin your content marketing!
