Don’t choose the wrong business category

Invisibility in local search results can be achieved by choosing the wrong categories for your Google My Business listing. Be sure to pick the right categories for your company listing in the Google category base.

Do add a legitimate business address

You have to be physically located in a specific city in order for it to be likely that your business is included in the local pack results of Google. An exception would be that you have a business model that is unique. For example, you have the only doughnut shop that is Vegan in a radius of 100 miles.

If you are not physically in a city, do not hope to rank locally there. Instead, pay for advertising, or shoot for the goal of organic rankings that have content you developed for cities where your company is not located.

It should be noted that if you list a business location with Google, it must be a real world and genuine location. This is true even if your company is home based or a service area business.

Don’t forget to list your business where you can

Your local business listings on YP, Facebook, Google, Yelp and others have a bigger impact than little known sources. It doesn’t hurt to list your company on as many legitimate sites as you can.
